That’s why the store’s refrigerated units need a lid…

During a “Stop the Power Thief” project in a grocery store, there was an opportunity to measure how much difference it makes in electricity consumption when the store’s refrigerated units have a lid versus when they do not. In this case, the test involved what is called an impulse or plug-in refrigerator. This type of refrigerated unit is not connected to the store’s central cooling system but is simply plugged into an outlet, just like the refrigerator in a home kitchen.

There has never been any doubt that covering refrigerated units with lids pays off, but it is rare during the “Stop the Power Thief” projects to have the chance to measure the effect. Therefore, FlexMeter installed a power meter on the refrigerated unit to measure its electricity consumption.

It was possible to measure the electricity consumption without the lid, after which a lid was installed on the impulse cooler. The measurements were taken over several days, meaning there was activity in the store, with customers taking items from the refrigerated unit and restocking happening during some periods.

As you can see from the chart, there is a significant difference in electricity consumption depending on whether the refrigerated unit has a lid or not.

The reduction in electricity consumption is just one of the many advantages of using lids on refrigerated units. Since the lid traps the cold air and maintains the internal temperature, the refrigeration system doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the desired temperature. This can result in lower electricity consumption, leading to savings on the energy bill. Additionally, the lid can help reduce heat influx from the surroundings, which also leads to lower power consumption.

On top of that, the lid helps preserve the temperature and quality of the stored goods for a longer period. The lid prevents heat loss and protects against dust and impurities, which can extend the shelf life of the stored items. Furthermore, the lid contributes to maintaining hygiene by preventing direct contact between the goods and the external environment.

Thus, there are significant advantages to installing lids on refrigeration and freezer units in grocery stores. The cost of the lid and installation must, of course, be considered, but depending on electricity prices, this is one of the initiatives with the shortest payback time.

What about sales?

It was not possible to measure the effect on sales during this test, but from tests in other stores, the report is that sales are not affected by the installation of lids.
