By implementing “Spot Waste,” we discovered that some of our kitchen equipment was using a surprising amount of electricity at night. We established a team of employees who made a few changes to work routines. Now, we have reduced CO2 emissions by around 8,000 kg per year, and our electricity bill is lower. The hunt for the “Wasters” continues.
At a 4-star conference hotel like Skanderborg Park, we use a lot of electricity, but we are, of course, keen to save as much as we can—for the sake of both the environment and our bottom line. Our kitchen is one of the biggest energy consumers, so when I was contacted by KEN Storkøkken about the “Spot Waste” project, I was quickly convinced that it was a concept worth investing in.
The process brought several surprises, and some of the savings were really low-hanging fruit. For example, we are now saving more than 1,000 kroner a month just by turning off all standby power when the hotel is closed. Additionally, replacing both our ventilation system and cooling equipment has resulted in annual savings of 33,000 and 25,000 kroner, respectively. The entire process has been a positive experience for our organization, and it’s been great to see how the staff became engaged in finding green savings. It almost turned into a sport!
Based on the comprehensive report we received, we have decided to make some new investments. In that process, KEN Storkøkken helped us apply for energy subsidies from our electricity company, which has helped recoup part of the investment.
I highly recommend that my colleagues look into “Catch the Wasters.” I’m convinced that there are significant savings to be found for most businesses.

We had a major “AHA moment” when we implemented “Catch the Wasters” and were able to visualize the distribution of electricity consumption in our kitchen. We simply had no idea that it could be so easy to save so much. We reduced our electricity consumption by 23%, which corresponds to 4,600 kg less CO2 emissions. And we’re not done yet. We’re continuing to work on savings because the green transition is a priority for us.
It was really exciting for both my staff and me to participate in the energy-saving project “Spot Waste”. Naturally, we want to save energy in our kitchen, but we were surprised by how little it took to save as much as 22% of our energy consumption when we were made aware of some possible adjustments to our switch-on and switch-off times. We are motivated to improve even further and look forward to continued collaboration with the Energy Consultant from KEN STORKØKKEN.
It was really interesting to participate in the energy-saving project “Catch the Wasters.” We actually managed to cut our tunnel dishwasher’s electricity consumption in half with some very simple changes to our work procedures. We are both surprised and happy with the results.
Reducing electricity consumption not only results in savings on the electricity bill but is also a way to meet guests’ growing interest in sustainability. Montra Hotel Sabro Kro has held the tourism industry’s environmental label, GreenKey, for many years. We see it as a natural part of our business culture to constantly strive to reduce our environmental footprint, and energy optimization is an ongoing process.
